Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

Feel the dizzying height and immense depth as you stand on the edge of this striking black canyon. Here at Black Canyon of the Gunnison, outside of Montrose Colorado, you’ll experience some of the oldest and steepest rock walls in North America.

In just a half-day, you can explore the popular South Rim of the canyon, looking down over the 2,000 foot cliffs. There are many easy nature trails with multiple canyon vistas that wind along the rim. These trails are level and suitable for children of all ages.

Pack a picnic and see the canyon from the bottom up by driving along East Portal Road. Tight turns and a steep grade help you feel the descent into the cavern even in your car. When you reach the base of the canyons, there are many sweet spots for setting up a picnic lunch and admiring the dramatic cliff faces.
